Those lines are from "Dancing in the Dark" which is widely known as Bruce Springsteen's iconic 1984 rock anthem from his Born in the U.S.A. album.  Little known fact about "Dancing in the Dark": although it is often considered a happy, danceable tune, the lyrics describe the artist's feeling of artistic exhaustion, futility, and depression. Springsteen has confirmed that this was written at a time when his producer was pressuring him to write more hit singles.

Say what you will, but it appears that pressure worked.
